Freeing the Grid

Design | Branding | Outreach | Web

Freeing the Grid is a joint initiative of the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) and Vote Solar that grades states on specific policies that help to increase clean energy adoption and access to the grid. The state grades are intended to assist policymakers and other stakeholders with identifying policy best practices for enabling the rapid growth of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar and energy storage, and benchmarking states’ existing policies against those adopted in other jurisdictions.

I created the Freeing the Grid logo and branding colors, designed state interconnection grade flyers, ran a social media and email campaign, and assisted in editing the website.

#Interconnection policies specify the processes, timelines, and costs associated with connecting distributed energy resources (#DERs)—like #solar and #energystorage systems—safely and reliably to the grid.

@IREC and @VoteSolar’s #FreeingtheGrid series grades U.S. states on key policies that increase #cleanenergy adoption and access to the #grid, helping them identify best practices and benchmark their existing policies against other states’.

  • IREC and Vote Solar’s new #FreeingtheGrid report found that most U.S. states have room for improvement in their statewide #interconnection procedures!

New Mexico received the only “A” grade and has incorporated the highest number of best practices identified. Arizona, California, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Michigan, and New York all received “B” grades.

  • Because #interconnection rules dictate how distributed energy resources (#DER) projects get reviewed and approved for operation on the electric #grid, they determine how efficiently new #cleanenergy resources can connect to the grid.

If they allow for a transparent and expedited review process and provide sufficient clarity around timelines and other expectations, states are more likely to avoid backlogs that can leave projects languishing in clogged interconnection queues and delays that can stretch for months or years.
